A:An arc flash is the light and heat produced as part of an arc fault, a type of electrical explosion or discharge that results from a low-impedance connection through air to ground or another voltage phase in an electrical system.
Q:What is NFPA 70E?
A:NFPA 70E, titled Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, is a standard of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The document cover electrical safety requirements for employees.
Q:What is ATPV?
A:ATPV– short for Arc Thermal Performance Value, a type of arc rating. It measures the incident energy of a PPE that results in 50 % probability that sufficient heat transfer through the PPE is predicted to cause a second-degree skin burn.
Q:What is HRC and CAT?
A:HRC means Hazard Risk Category. NFPA 70E used HRC when discussing the minimum level of protection in arc flash PPE needed for a certain task before 2015. However, after the 2015 update of NFPA 70E, it uses CAT, which means Category, to replace HRC.
The most common categories are CAT 2 and CAT 4 (Simplified Two-Category System recommended by NFPA 70E). CAT 1 and CAT 3 exist, but they are rarely used.
Q:All faceshields are acceptable for the electric arc flash?
A:Of coursenot. Common faceshields can provide protection against impact. However, they cannot provide protection against arc flash. Workers must choose the faceshields which meets NFPA 70E while working in an arc flash hazard environment.
